Coast Guard rescues aquatic bird tangled in fishing line
An aquatic bird is recovering from his injuries after being tangled in a fishing line in the Monterey Bay.
Last week, the SPCA for Monterey County Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center received a call about a Brandt’s cormorant tangled in discarded fishing line near the Coast Guard pier.
“The cormorant suffered serious injuries in his struggle to free himself,” said Director of Community Outreach, Beth Brookhouser.
With the help of the Coast Guard, the cormorant was taken to the rescue center for emergency care. After he was stabilized the SPCA for Monterey County said he was taken to International Bird Rescue in Fairfield for long-term rehabilitation.
“Sadly, the fishing line was located in a popular cormorant nesting site, and this bird, who is now facing a long recovery from his injuries, was likely part of a pair raising their young,” said Brookhouser.
The SPCA for Monterey County said this incident serves as a reminder of why fishing line should be thrown away properly.
“Thank you to the person who called us about the cormorant, and thank you all for your support that makes rescues like this possible. Please always call us when you see injured or orphaned wild animals in need,” Brookhouser said.
