Firefighters conduct controlled burn at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park

Amid all the fires, crews from California State Parks and Cal Fire are conducting a 14-acre prescribed burn in Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park.

The prescribed burn will take place around 10 a.m. Thursday, conditions permitting. The area is located off of Graham Hill Road, near the campground.

Pine Trail from Ridge Road down to Powder Mill Road will be closed during ignitions.

“Smoke should be expected from this area and should not be a cause for concern,” said California State Parks Fire Management.

Fire officials said the burn at Henry Cowell Sandhills is part of a long-term strategy to reduce the threat of a wildfire and to maintain the Sandhills rare habitat.

“This rare habitat type relies on fire to maintain a healthy ecosystem and regenerate sensitive species,” fire officials said.
