Hundreds of opium poppy plants discovered in Watsonville

Another opium poppy plant bust on the Central Coast.

The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called to the 1000 block of Riverside Drive in Watsonville for a report of an opium poppy grow on Tuesday.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the property had been vacant for more than 90 days and is bank owned.

Deputies found hundreds of plants in between other weeds and plants to disguise the opium plants. Deputies found around 400 opium plants.

The investigation is ongoing.

Recently, opium poppy plants have also been found in Moss Landing, Royal Oaks and Aromas.
