Highway 1 at Mud Creek estimated to open end of July

CalTrans has updated the expected reopen date for Highway 1 at Mud Creek near Big Sur. They now expect the road to open at the end of July.

It will go across the landslide and include embankments, rocks and netting in an effort to reopen the road quicker and at a lower cost.

The landslide happened last May, and it is one of the biggest to ever happen on the Big Sur coast. It dumped more than 6 million cubic yards of dirt and debris on the road.

The last update put the estimated reopen date at mid-September, so progress has been faster than expected.

CalTrans will continue to provide updates and a final one is expected in early July.

After it opens, there may be occasional closures as roadwork continues.
