Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium in need of renovation
City leaders and residents are pushing for the renovation of the historical Civic Auditorium.
It was built in 1939 and has hosted events and performers from all over the World. Now many say it’s in need of some updating.
“I think everyone has a story about a concert of a graduation that they attended here,” says David Terrazas, Mayor of Santa Cruz.
He says the venue is still used by many, but is not living up to its full potential.
“Some authors are unable to come here because of the size of the venue and how it’s laid out and we also heard about some concerts that are unable to be held here because of the space limitations and also some seniors that have access issues here that we want to make sure is addressed,” says Terrazas.
The building has gone through several renovations since it was first opened, but lacks some accessibility qualities.
On Thursday a new group called “Friends of the Civic Auditorium” was formed. Their goal is to bring awareness to the facilities needs and how urgently should be taken care of.
“We want to activate the community, we want to stimulate the economy here in downtown Santa Cruz and we want to create a safer, more enjoyable, comfortable, and presenter friendly venue for our community to gather,” says Ellen Prinack, member of Friends of the Civic Auditorium.
Some of the needs are making the stairs not as steep, updating the technology and production equipment, building a second stroy lobby and balcony making the higher seats more easily accessible.
Santa Cruz venues have to compete with some bay area venues to get artist and these renovations would make it more appealing.
“It’s really the most important cultural gathering place we have, it’s the largest, it’s in downtown Santa Cruz, and it brings together our community in very special ways in terms of hosting local presenters as well as national people of renound,” says Prinack.
