Monterey County boy makes finals for Scripps National Spelling Bee

UPDATE 5/31/18 7:00 p.m.: Monterey County’s Paul Hamrick won’t be advancing past round 11 in the Scripps National Spelling Bee after misspelling the word “fourrier.”

However, Hamrick has a lot to be proud of making it to the top 16. According to the Scripps National Spelling Bee, this is only his fifth spelling bee he’s participated in.

PREVIOUS STORY:

One of Monterey County’s own has made the final 16 in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

14-year-old 8th grader Paul Hamrick is homeschooled in Monterey and previously competed in last year’s Scripps Bee.

Hamrick is among the 16 spellers heading to the finals tonight. The competition will be broadcasted on ESPN at 8:30.

This is the first time in 23 years of the Monterey County Bee that a Monterey County Champion has made it to the evening Finals.
