GoFundMe started for Carmel Valley man and dog killed in crash

A driver was killed after crashing into a tree Monday morning.

67-year-old Kenneth Klein of Carmel Valley was driving his gray 1987 Toyota pickup when he traveled off the road and struck a tree.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident occurred at E. Carmel Valley Road and Tassajara Road around 10:39 a.m.

“Mr. Klein sustained fatal injuries due to the impact and the fact he was not wearing his seatbelt,” said CHP.

Carmel Valley Road was closed for about an hour.

CHP is investigating the crash.

The Cachagua Fire Department posted to Facebook about the incident expressing sorrow for the victim whose brother and nephew are active firefighters.

“Kevin (Kenneth’s brother) was part of our response today and had to say goodbye to his brother at the scene of the accident. All of us at Cachagua Fire are hurting, many of us have known Kenny for decades. It was a very tough day for our Cachagua Fire family. Kenny adored his dog Cooper and they were together until the very last moment. Unfortunately, Cooper didn’t make it either. Please give the Kleins a hug if you see them and maybe give a howl out to Cooper.”

Unrelated to the crash, a Monterey County Sheriff’s Deputy’s patrol car was on scene assisting when their unoccupied patrol car caught fire. The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office is looking into the cause of the fire.
