Salinas police arrest suspected bank robber

Salinas police have arrested a man suspected of robbing the Wells Fargo bank on Natividad Road. Officers were dispatched around 3:50 p.m. to a report of a possible armed robbery. A Wells Fargo Bank employee told police the man handed her a note demanding money and claiming he had a gun. Police were unable to find the suspect at the scene.

Police say that at about 6 p.m., an off-duty officer recognized Marcus Trujillo, 48, from the description given at Ike’s Love and Sandwiches shop on North Main Street. Trujillo was sitting on a table with a sandwich and counting a large sum of money.

He was eventually taken into custody. An investigation revealed Trujillo allegedly had gone to MOD Pizza and offered the employees $100 for letting them use the bathroom. Police say they denied the offer, but he gave them $50 anyway. He also purchased two pizzas and a beer before leaving to the sandwich shop.

Trujillo was booked to the Monterey County Jail.
