Coding event held encouraging girls to get involved in tech..
Digital NEST and Girls Who Code teamed up on Sunday to support diversity in tech.
Several guests from the tech industry spoke to encourage youth, in particular girls, to get more involved in computer sciences. The event was held at the National Steinbeck Center.
The leader of the Girls Who Code program says while there are growing opportunities for women in tech, it’s not talked about enough. “A lot of the problem is that young girls don’t see computer science as career option, so starting them off young where they start to think about their future and bringing them together in a space where they can feel comfortable and actually have mentors guide them and really see that as a future,” says Meya Gorbea.
For the first time Digital NEST, a non-profit training youth in tech, paired up with the group. Miguel Lozoya Burciaga says he wants girls to know the opportunities they have, “we really wanted was to create a space where girls can really network with each other, get a little more comfortable talking about nerdy stuff.”
Digital NEST has two locations, one in Salinas and one in Watsonville. Girls Who Code meetup every Saturday at CSUMB.
