The CHP planning extra DUI patrols for Cinco De Mayo weekend

Cinco de Mayo celebrations often lead to an increase in drunk driving arrests. The last time the holiday fell on a Saturday was back in 2012 , and this year law enforcement have something new to worry about.

Marijuana was not legal in California the last time Cinco de Mayo fell on the weekend, so this time around there’s a higher chance of people smoking weed and getting behind the wheel. The CHP says it’s all just not worth it. Whether drunk or under the influence of drugs, a DUI fine can cost up to $15,000 dollars, not to mention a whole heap of legal problems.

“We are looking for anything and everything. Usually if a driver is impaired they are speeding or driving slower than the speed limit. Weaving in and out of their lane or in their lane,” said CHP Officer Gonzalez.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration , 38% of all fatal crashes that occurred around May 5th involved impaired drivers with blood alcohol levels of .08 and above.

The CHP recommends you plan ahead to have a designated driver, or just stay home and celebrate.
Extra patrols will run through the weekend.
