Hazmat situation in Salinas on Soledad Street
Police, fire, and a hazmat team were called to the scene of an apparent drug overdose Thursday night in Salinas.
They found an unconscious 18-year-old man inside a home in the 300 block of Soledad Street. He had apparently overdosed on a narcotic and was treated with Narcan.
When responders found an unidentified powder, they evacuated the home and called the hazmat team to test it.
“Out of an abundance of caution, especially with all the recent heroin and opioid crisis going on in the United States, we brought in a full hazmat team to make sure we weren’t dealing with a Fentanyl or carfentanyl that could expose responders to additional hazards,” said interim Fire Chief Brett Loomis.
The powder did not test positive as as an opiate.
Police say the man — and others in the home — were uncooperative with responders.
He was not taken into police custody and left the scene after being treated.
