Salinas man sentenced to 9 years in prison for hit-and-run that left victim paralyzed

A Salinas man has been sentenced to 9 years in prison for a hit-and-run that left the victim paralyzed from the neck down.

41-year-old Horacio Alcantar was driving a black Chevy Silverado back in July of 2016 on San Juan Grade Road when he crashed into a silver Chevy Malibu head-on.

Alcantar left the scene. Salinas PD searched his car and found an address on the vehicle registration paperwork. Officers went to the address and found Alcantar drunk with a blood alcohol content level two times the legal limit.

The victim had life threatening injuries, including numerous fractures to the face, brain trauma with skull fracture and loss of consciousness, the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office said.

The victim will spend his life in a wheelchair, paralyzed and unable to speak.
