Wacky weather hits the Central Coast

Weather has been the talk of the town on the Central Coast on Monday.

Rain, hail, sunshine and even some snow, residents have seen it all.

Santa Catalina School in Monterey even taking a minute in between classes to celebrate the rarity. Rich Patterson with Santa Catalina says, about an hour into the school day the cloud just opened up and it started pouring and all of a sudden the hail was everywhere and it didn’t just melt right away, it stayed on the ground probably for 30 minutes or so.”

Senior Ana Leon says this was a first for her at the school, “I’ve never seen it, I’ve been here for 4 years and I’ve never seen it before.”

Patterson says it’s was the perfect time to take advantage of this rare weather, “they had a little bit of flexibility, they could stay outside a little longer and just kind of enjoy the unusual nature of it, they work very hard here. A lot of the seniors just got their college acceptance letters so there’s excitement around that and then to have something like this happen, it’s a lot of fun.”

Monterey Regional Airport also saw some hail along with other parts of the county.

But that was not the only area in the Central Coast to get some abnormal weather for this time of year. The Santa Cruz Mountains near Summit Road saw snow.

While it was not enough to stick on the ground, residents say they were shocked to see it this late in April.
