Candidate for Monterey County sheriff drops out of race

Candidate Jose Mendoza has dropped out of the 2018 race for Monterey County sheriff. He announced his withdrawal in a Facebook post Wednesday night.

Mendoza did not announce exactly why he was dropping out of the race, but he did share his criticism of current Sheriff Steve Bernal and how he runs the department.

In his announcement, Mendoza also wrote that he will be backing Deputy Scott Davis for the position.

The primary election will be on June 5.
