Monterey County Superior Court issues alert about phone scam

The Monterey County Superior Court is warning the public about a scam involving the court and law enforcement.

According to the court, people having been getting calls disguised as either the court or law enforcement advising them that they are in contempt of court for failure to appear, report or respond and these actions are “class E misdemeanor.”

The callers then threaten arrest if the fines are not paid.

The court wants people to be aware these calls are fraudulent and the court and law enforcement would never call to let someone know about a lawsuit, threaten arrest or demand payment.

The court communicates by mail and correspondence and will always include case information, future court dates and fine information if applicable.

If you or someone you know receives a phone call or email from someone demanding money for a fine or warrant, you should report it immediately to your local law enforcement agency.

If you have any more questions contact the clerk’s office at (831) 775-5400.
