Santa Cruz County to roll out voter registration during National Walk Out Day
Officials in Santa Cruz County will be taking advantage of students being out in full force on Walk Out Day.
On Wednesday, the Santa Cruz County Clerks Office will be sending out voter registration booths to 14 Santa Cruz area high schools to encourage and sign students up to vote. They’ll be there at the request of several students, and hope to inform young minds that the greatest way to make their voice heard is by being part of electing officials into office by voting.
“This could be a first time exposure for people and sometimes voter registration is the entry level step to civic engagement so having students out in the quad or the library, wherever we are depending on the weather, and being asked ‘”Hey, are you registered?'” If you’re 16 years old, you can pre-register, and involving them I think is a good first step to showing them how important it is to be engaged,” said Santa Cruz County Clerk Gail Pellerin.
The voter registration booths will be manned by the Santa Cruz County Clerk’s Office and volunteers from Women’s March Santa Cruz and League of Women Voters of Santa Cruz County. Though you must be 18 years of age to vote, 16 and 17-year-olds can pre-register which will automatically activate their eligibility when they turn 18.
