Ex probation officer to serve 1 year in jail for deadly hit-and-run in Salinas
UPDATE: 3/7/2018 2:21 p.m. An ex Monterey County probation officer who fatally struck a man with her car and drove away has been ordered to serve one year in jail.
36-year-old Sonia Cano was off-duty when she hit 52-year-old Alan Ellis as he crossed North Main Street in Salinas. Cano pleaded guilty to driving drunk when she hit Ellis on December 10, 2017.
About three hours later, Cano called police to turn herself in.
On Wednesday, a judge sentenced Cano to five years probation and one year in custody.

An ex probation officer for Monterey County pleaded guilty to a hit-and-run in Salinas which resulted in the death of a 52-year-old man.
36-year-old Sonia Cano pleaded guilty to driving drunk when she hit Alan Ellis, 52, with her car on December 10, 2017.
Around 7 p.m. that night, Cano was driving down North Main Street when she struck a pedestrian jaywalking.
“The victim died as a result of the collision. Following the collision, Cano fled the area without providing assistance to the victim,” said the District Attorney’s Office.
Cano called the Salinas Police Department around 10 p.m. to turn herself in.
DA’s Office said, “Upon contacting Cano, Salinas Police Officers observed signs of alcohol intoxication.”
Cano will be sentenced on March 7 to a grant of felony probation which carries up to one year of incarceration in county jail.
