Man shot on Highway 101 near Greenfield

A violent week on the Central Coast continues with another shooting today. It caused a major backup on Highway 101 after a man was shot near Greenfield.

At around ten, Greenfield Police and Monterey County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of a shooting on Highway 101 near Thorne Road just outside of Greenfield. There they found a man in his car suffering from at least one gun shot wound. He was taken to a hospital with what officers believe to be non-life threatening injuries. It’s believed that the man was shot by another car while driving on Highway 101, but specific details are limited at the moment.

“As usual with these kind of cases, if anyone has any information or saw anything and we didn’t contact at the scene, please don’t hesitate to give us a call,” said Monterey County Sheriff Commander John Thornburg.

Today’s shooting marks the third in Monterey County this week. Last night, a 24-year old man was shot multiple times in his car near the 300 block of East Market and Simas Street in Salinas. He was transported to Natividad Medical Center and is expected to be ok. And on Tuesday, 32-year old Joseph Suniga was shot and killed while riding his bike on the 600 block of Apple Street in Greenfield.
Officials are still searching for the suspect in that incident. He is described as a Hispanic juvenile in his mid-teens and was riding a BMX-style bike at the time.

Currently no arrests have been made and law enforcement is looking to the public for help in solving these cases. That includes a 25-hundred dollar reward for the arrest and conviction of the suspect in Tuesday’s homicide in Greenfield.
