New luxury hotel breaks ground in Sand City

The Monterey Peninsula thrives on the tourism industry, and the smallest of the Peninsula cities made its first step to strengthen the industry even more today.

The tiny town of Sand City broke ground, or perhaps broke sand today on their impending luxury eco-resort that’s 25-years in the making.

The official ribbon cutting and groundbreaking for Sand City’s Monterey Bay Shores eco-resort today saw a big crowd eager to know more about it. Several people involved with the project were on hand to give speeches and tell the story of how this long-awaited resort has finally started construction. The eco-friendly resort is supposed to be a huge economic and environmental benefit to the Peninsula region, boosting tourism, spending, property values, all while helping fund dune restoration and funding of local environmental projects.

“We will see what it’s gonna be, what impacts it will have here on the Peninsula. Hopefully it will get more eco-tourism going and maybe others will pick up off of Sand City’s lead,” said Sand City Mayor Mary Ann Carbone.

The resort, which will be located right off the Fremont exit of Highway One, will consist of 184 hotel rooms, 92 hotel condominium units, and 92 residential condominiums. The 800-million dollar development will be the first new coastal resort built in Northern California in decades.

But for those of you getting excited to be one of the first to experience the new resort, don’t hold your breath ust yet. The Monterey Bay Shores Resort is scheduled to open in 2021.
