Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County switching to solar power after high energy costs

What if we told you a non-profit in Monterey County is paying $80-thousand annually just to keep the lights on? That’s the case with the Boys & Girls Clubhouses in Salinas and Seaside.

Both clubs are switching to solar power, in Salinas the panels have been installed and they’re just waiting on PG&E to switch them over. And in Seaside construction will hopefully begin in the next couple months.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County pay a combined total of $80-thousand dollars annually on power. Once both clubs are operating on solar, they will save an estimated 97% on energy costs. Which means more money for the kids.

“These funds that we save will more than likely go to hiring program staff or directly to the kids. That’s a big thing that we want to do with our finances here is make sure as much money goes right to the services for our children.” said Associate Vice President, Ron Johnson.

Between both clubs they serve around 600 kids a day. The club in Seaside still needs to raise $50-thousand dollars before construction can begin, if you would like to donate they will gladly accept.
