Bomb Squad investigates suspicious device at home where Salinas Police shot man

UPDATE 2/21/18 10: 30 p.m.

Bomb making materials were found Wednesday at a Salinas home. A home already under investigation after an officer involved shooting there.

The Monterey County Sheriffs Office bomb squad was called in. Salinas Police say that the bomb squad did not find any explosive material at the house but what they did find was concerning.

The incident came less than a week after an officer involved shooting at 717 Jefferson Street.

On Friday night, Javier Rodriguez was fighting with his girlfriend when he fired a gun in the air. Police showed up and tried to get inside, that’s when he lunged at them with a sword.

[The sword] comes pretty close to crossing the threshold of the door, right within inches or a foot of where police are. When this happens and it happens suddenly, the police immediately start firing rounds,” said Berkley Brannon, chief assistant DA with the Monterey County DA’s Office on Tuesday.

Rodriguez was hit in the hand and is recovering in the hospital and the police investigation continues.

“The District Attorney’s office handles the officer involved shooting investigation,” said Commander John Murray with the Salinas Police Department, “Our department will handle any other crimes that took place leading up to it or that are discovered separate from the officer involved shooting.”

But It’s what police found during a search warrant that led police to call the Monterey County Bomb Squad.

“The bomb squad determined that there were component parts for potentially an explosive device however it was lacking the explosive material to make the device complete,” Murray said.

Though the situation was serious, police say there was no danger to nearby homes.

“We did cordon off the area and block the street off but we didn’t feel there was a need for evacuation and that was echoed by the bomb squad,” Murray said.

The Salinas Police Department is still investigating but says at this point, it doesn’t look like Rodriguez will face charges for the materials found in his home.

UPDATE: Salinas Police tell KION the bomb squad determined there were component parts for a potential explosive device, however it was lacking the explosive material to make the device complete.
