Whalefest Monterey begins Saturday
No whale tales here, just Whalefest Monterey and it begins Saturday. Think of Whalefest as a big two-day welcome home party, and the guests of honor are the gray whales returning back to the Monterey Bay.
This year is the 8th annual whalefest, and it continues to grow each year. The festival celebrates the migration of the gray whales. There will be activities, food and fun education opportunities for everyone in the family to enjoy down at the Monterey Wharf. This is the ideal time to have a festival like this, because the whale watching is phenomenal right now.
“Whale watching is epic. We have the gray whale migration going through. Just off of Asilomar, 17 mile drive it is like a highway of the gray whales going southbound. We’ve also been seeing about 16 to 20 humpback whales that are staying throughout the year, just off what we call Mulligan hill at Fort Ord. There’s anchovies top to bottom. There’s no need for them to migrate,” said Keith Stemler of Chris’ Fishing and Whale Watching.
More than 100-thousand people travel to the Monterey Bay each year to whale watch. So not only is it a fun activity to do, it’s also a very big part of the Monterey economy.
The migration party will begin Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at Old Fisherman’s Wharf and go until 5:00 p.m. Sunday. It’s a family fun event and free to everyone.
