California mudslide sweeps CHP cruiser away
The California Highway Patrol released new video that show two officers getting caught up in the Montecito mudslides.
The officers were responding to a fire, when they inadvertently drove into the path of the mudflow. The force of it picked up the patrol car and began carrying it away. After 15 brutal seconds, the officer was able to gain traction and drive out.
Two people are still missing after the deadly mudslides in Montecito. Both are children — a teenager and a toddler. The Santa Barbara County Search and Rescue team has been working to find them along with mutual aid crews bringing fresh dogs for the hunt.
“Now we have a run of dry weather and this mud has been able to dry out which allows the mud to crack which allows any smells that were trapped by it to percolate back up to the atmosphere,” said Nelson Trichler, Santa Barbara County Search and Rescue.
There are 20 different dog teams from all over the state helping in the search. Each time they alert their handler crews step in to search the area. They said they will keep doing it until they find the two who remain missing.
