Groundbreaking for new Monterey County food bank set for Monday
The Food Bank for Monterey County has been leasing their current building on Market Street for around 20-years. This new facility that will be built on Rossi Street has been a long time coming. The food bank serves 25-percent of the children in the county and 1/5 of the adult population. The current facility only has 5,000 square feet of cold storage, just a fraction of the 20-thousand feet the new food bank will have over on Rossi. Congressman Jimmy Panetta will speak at the groundbreaking later this morning.
“The new building is going to be entirely solar powered, and just because it’s new it will be increasingly efficient and therefor our overhead costs will go down,” said Food Bank Executive Director Melissa Kendrick.
The food bank still needs to raise around $5-million dollars by June. One fundraising campaign is called A “Spoonful of Love to Help End Hunger in Monterey County.” You can buy a spoon for $100.00. Each purchase will have your name engraved on it, and be put on a “wall of spoons” at the new facility.
