Central Coast woman escapes vehicle after being taken against her will
A Marina man is behind bars after taking his ex-girlfriend against her will and leading police on a chase.
On Monday, Marina Police Officers were called out to a report of a physical domestic disturbance in the 400 Block of Kelli Court in the City of Marina. When they arrived, officers determined the victim had been physically assaulted by her former boyfriend resulting in numerous visible injuries. She told officers at one point the suspect bit her, and she believed he was trying to bite off a part of her face. She was ultimately transported to a local hospital for treatment of her injuries.
The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Mark Ziolkowski fled the scene after pulling the victim out of her vehicle and taking it without permission. At that time, officers were unable to locate him.
On Wednesday, the victim received a message from Ziolkowski telling her he wanted to meet her at a local convenience store to return the vehicle. She notified police and responded to the location to meet with him. Prior to police arrival, Ziolkowski saw the victim and told her to get in the stolen vehicle.
Their whereabouts were unknown and calls were made to the victim by 911 dispatchers in an attempt to locate her but there was no immediate answer. At one point a dispatcher said a female (later determined to be the victim) answered the phone and was heard giving a possible location and then hung up. Officers responded to the area the call was believed to be coming from.
While in route, a vehicle matching the stolen vehicle description was seen traveling south on Del Monte Blvd. Officers tried to catch up to the vehicle which accelerated at a high rate of speed and turned westbound onto Beach Road. As officers turned onto the road, the vehicle was then stopped and the suspect could be seen running from the vehicle into a vacant dirt lot. A perimeter was immediately established to contain Ziolkowski who was located and taken into custody by Marina Police Officers.
It was determined that Ziolkowski drove the victim to an unincorporated area north of the City of Marina against her will. The victim was able to escape from the vehicle. She was located safely in the 3300 block of Del Monte Blvd. by officers from the California State University Monterey Bay Police Department.
Ziolkowski was transported to a local hospital for injuries he sustained while fleeing from officers and was later booked into the Monterey County Jail for the following charges:
243(d) PC – Battery causing great bodily injury; 273.5(a) PC – Domestic Battery; 215 PC – Carjacking; 664-203, Attempted Mayhem; 148(a)(1) PC, Delaying/Obstructing an Officer; 236 PC, False Imprisonment; 273.6(a)PC, Violating a Domestic Violence Court Order; 1203.2(a)PC, Violation of Probation
