Body found at Moss Landing harbor ID’d as Santa Cruz County man

UPDATE: The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office told KION the body pulled from the waters off of Moss Landing Harbor has been identified as 44-year-old Rene Delatorre of Santa Cruz County.

Delatorre had been missing since Friday. According to the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office, Delatorre left his home in Watsonville on January 12th and had not been seen since.

No cause of death has been determined, and an autopsy is scheduled for Friday. No word yet how long he had been in the water.

1/16/2018: A body was found in the ocean off Moss Landing Harbor around 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

A fisherman first spotted the body 200 yards off Moss Landing Beach, pulled it onto his boat and called the Coast Guard. The fisherman told KION the body was a male.

Paramedics arrived and confirmed the person was dead. Authorities believe the body had been in the ocean for some time.

It’s unclear how the person died but investigators do not suspect foul play. The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office and State Parks are investigating.
