World Surf League calls off Mavericks Challenge for Tuesday

The World Surf League Big Wave Tour announces they are calling off the Mavericks Competition on Tuesday due to unfavorable conditions and are aiming for a later date.

Officials have been monitoring surf-conditions and swell forecasts closely and have decided to wait for a better opportunity.

The window for the surf competition opened January 3rd and closes February 28th.

Officials tell KION there is a chance for the competition to be held Thursday, but winds might be too high. They also say another swell is expected January 22nd.

According to the WSL BWT the competition “only runs events when surf reaches the 30-foot-plus mark, mobilizing on 72 hours’ notice with an international field of Big Wave men’s and women’s athletes.”

This year 30 surfers from around the world will be competing, several from Santa Cruz County.
