Closure lifted at Del Monte Beach following sewage spill

UPDATE: 1/12/2018 3:41 p.m. Monterey County Health officials said the beach closure at Del Monte Beach has been lifted.

Del Monte Beach was closed Thursday due to a sewage spill on Casa Verde Way at Del Monte Avenue. Officials estimated the spill was as large as 1,500 gallons.

A sewage spill in Monterey has caused the closure of Del Monte Beach.

The Monterey Fire Department informed the Environmental Health Bureau that sewage was spilling into the storm drain system on Casa Verde Way at Del Monte Ave. The spill occurred Thursday around 9 a.m. and was estimated to be as much as 1,500 gallons.

“The beach will remain closed until samples indicate that the water is again safe for contact according to state guidelines,” said Monterey County Health Officials.

Contact with the contaminated water can cause people to get sick.
