Monterey County seeking artist for official county flag

The county of Monterey is asking for the public’s help in creating the first-ever official county flag.

Currently, only 24 of 58 counties in California have adopted an official flag and Monterey County could become the 25th to do so. Other local counties including Santa Cruz, San Benito and Santa Clara Counties have adopted their official flags.

Guidelines are as follows: Art designs for the flag emblem should embody the history of Monterey County, consider color schemes and elements from various parts of the county such as historical landmarks and local wildlife, agriculture, coastline and rivers, and mountain ranges.

Artists submitting a piece must live in Monterey County.

With due acknowledgement to the artist at the time of the selection and initial public adoption of the art, the final art design adopted as the official flag emblem becomes property of Monterey County, including any and all interests, rights and copyrights to the art, with exclusive right to use, alter and/or edit in any manner and reproduce for any purpose, including but not limited to future merchandising, advertising, promotion and publicity in any medium without notice, approval or other consideration to the artist. Artist will not receive monetary compensation for their submission or for granting any of these rights.
