UPDATE: Baby upgraded to “stable condition” after suspected DUI crash

UPDATE 1/1/2018 4:30 p.m.: Salinas police say the infant hurt in Sunday night’s crash has been upgraded to stable condition, but remains at a San Jose hospital for treatment.

ORIGINAL POST:

A six-month old baby is in “extremely critical” condition after a suspected DUI-related accident on Sunday night. The infant is still in the ICU, but “does appear to be improving a little bit at this time, ” Mike Groves, a Salinas Police Department Commander, said.

Police say around 9:53 p.m., a Chevrolet pickup truck driving North Main Street was coming to the stoplight at Boronda Road. The driver, identified as 44 year old Raphael Arriaga, did not stop according to police. They say he crashed into a small Honda SUV which was turning eastbound onto Boronda from the southbound lanes of North Main.

“(Witnesses) were all in agreement that the light actually was green for the family,” Commander Groves said.

The impact of the crash struck the Honda where a six month old infant was sitting in his car seat. The infant was life-flighted to a San Jose area hospital for his injuries. The mother of the child was taken to Natividad Medical Center.

Arriaga was arrested for driving under the influence and could face other charges.
