California Sea Kings back in action

It’s been a few years, but the Monterey Peninsula once again has professional basketball! If you haven’t heard of the California Sea Kings yet, then you’re missing out on some of the best basketball on the Monterey Peninsula.

These tall gentlemen you see here are the California Sea Kings, a basketball team based out of the Monterey Peninsula as part of the American Basketball Association, or ABA. The team currently has eight players and are coached by Laurian Watkins, a basketball trainer and coach with 30-plus years of professional experience. now you might be asking the obvious question…why are the sea kings practicing on the beach?

“The beach workouts and that type of cardio and developing strength and ligaments and certain hotspots of the body was something that just kind of gave us the edge. You know, our kids don’t get injured a lot, we’re in much much better condition, and it just makes for a more exciting game,” said California Sea Kings Head Coach, Laurian Watkins.

The beach workouts are something that most teams around the country can’t say they’re able to do, and the Sea Kings have certainly capitalized from it; in last Saturday’s season opener against the Oakland Bay Hawks, a game in which the Sea Kings had seven players on their roster compared to the Bayhawk’s 19, they still came away with a 127-89 win!

The California Sea Kings play their home games at Monterey Peninsula College, and will host the Las Vegas Wizards Saturday night at six pm. And if you don’t see them on the court, there’s a good chance you’ll see them on one of our local beaches.
