Long-time employees prepare to close doors for good at Oldtown Salinas store

Beverly Fabrics opened in 1970, almost 50 years ago, b ut they will soon close its doors for good. A hard task, especially around the holidays.

Store manager, Marilyn Harder, is just starting her 34th year at the store in Oldtown Salinas. She says, in all those years, there was only once or twice where she didn’t want to come to work. Impressive. But it makes leaving that much more difficult for her and the other employees. They have until the end of January to sell everything they can as they prepare to go out of business.

“All of us just want to get through this. It’s kind of a emotional rollercoaster. A lot of us have been here together 30 years plus. So we’re just trying to get through this and then we’ll go on from there,” said Store Manager, Marilyn Harder.

Marilyn and eight other employees will work until the store closes. Christmas is usually a busy and exciting time for the store, but understandably, the store is much emptier and has a different feel this year around. She says they are just trying to go along with a smile, say goodbye to lifelong customers and be good with it.

After this place closes, this one block in Oldtown will have three pretty big holes to fill. There’s Beverly’s .. and the iconic Dick Bruhn building just a few doors down, and then the old cinemas across the street, which are also empty.

T hey’ll be open until January, so if you haven’t been in, come see what you’re missing.
