CSUMB breaks ground on new academic building

California State University, Monterey Bay is breaking ground on a new $40 million academic building.

The 48,000 GSF, U-shaped building is expected to be completed by fall of 2019. According to CSUMB, the building will house CSUMB’s College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and will feature indoor and outdoor spaces for students and staff.

“With the new building, we have redoubled our dedication to faculty, staff, students and our community partners in a signature space that invites innovation and collaboration to enrich our disciplines and for students to engage in high-impact practices of applied learning, undergraduate research, service learning, and internships in service of community needs.”

The buildings major landscape feature is a terraced amphitheater that’s surrounded by a grass area which will be utilized for gatherings, outdoor movies or events.

But until it opens in 2019, students majoring in the arts, humanities and social scienes will have to float around.

“The college has been around the entire footprint of the campus. We have been from one end to the other with buildings that are, most, all of which are from the military era. So they are repurposed, you know, they fit sort of, but not quite,” Feinman said.

Rebecca Caladiao won’t get to enjoy the building since she’s graduating but said she’s excited to return as an alumna.

“So they are making their plan for a walking campus true. So we will see all the next changes. Besides the erection of this building, everything else is going to change on this campus over the next two years. It’s going to be a lot of changes,” Caladiao said.
