UPDATE 10/12/16 9:31 AM: An investigation into an officer-involved shooting in Soledad is underway after a suspect and an officer got into an altercation Tuesday night, according to the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office.
Assistant District Attorney Berkley Brannon said an officer pulled Walter Ancheta, 37, over in the 700 block of Grenada Street around 10:30 p.m. Brannon said Ancheta was in the car with his 10-year-old daughter, when he ran from the officer.
The DA’s office said Ancheta returned to the car and got into an altercation with the officer, throwing the officer down to the ground.
During the incident, Brannon said the officer shot Ancheta in the cheek and the bullet ended up in his shoulder. Ancheta’s daughter may have been in the car at the time of the shooting, according to Brannon.
Soledad Police Chief Eric Sills said the officer has worked with the department for a year and is on administrative leave, which is standard protocol.
Sills said the case was sent to the DA’s office to make sure the investigation is transparent. The last officer-involved shooting in Soledad was three years ago.
Brannon said the officer is okay and its not clear why Ancheta was pulled over or if he was armed.
