Another mother and daughter victims of Salinas hit-and-run

For the second time this week, a hit-and-run incident involving a mother and daughter occurred in Salinas Thursday.

According to Salinas Police, a 37-year-old pregnant woman was crossing John Street at the intersection of Wood Street with her 8-year-old daughter when the two were struck by a car in the crosswalk.

The driver, 59-year-old Carlos Bangos Caliso was driving eastbound on John Street in his 1993 Toyota pickup. Caliso stopped at the stop sign as the mother and daughter were crossing. After stopping he accelerated into the crosswalk and knocked both of them to the ground.

Caliso fled the scene but a witness to the hit-and-run followed him and called 911.

“Caliso admitted to being involved in the crash and said he fled because he was scared. He said he knew he hit the 8-year-old but didn’t realize he had hit both pedestrians,” said Salinas Police.

Caliso was booked into Monterey County Jail for hit-and-run causing injury and failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

Both mother and daughter were treated and released from Natividad Medical Center.

On Tuesday night, a 41-year-old mother and 6-year-old daughter were struck by a car and launched nearly 80 feet on North Main and Lamar Street. The mother remains in very critical condition, the daughter has been released from the hospital.
