Road construction expected to increase safety along Highway 101 near Greenfield

Safety enhancements are being made to a stretch of Highway 101. The project, which is expected to be completed next spring will cause traffic delays in both directions at times.

It’s all happening on about a two mile stretch along Highway 101 from Walnut Avenue to North Hudson Road in the Greenfield area. Crews are installing a median barrier and inside rumble strips. Most the highway leaving Salinas to that area does not have anything like this. Jim Shivers with Caltrans said it’s a well thought out location for the added safety precautions.

“It’s safe to say that these features are being added because traffic volumes have increased because what they were 3, 5, 10 years ago. And where there has been typically has been a collision history in those locations,” said Caltrans PIO, Jim Shivers.

Shivers says these precautions have been proven to work. Rumble strips alert a driver when drifting out of their lane and a barrier will stop drivers from going into oncoming traffic.

WHEN CAN YOU EXPECT TO SEE DELAYS:

Motorists will encounter lane closures northbound Sunday evenings from 9 pm until 6 am and Monday through Thursdays from 7 pm to 6 am. Daytime roadwork will occur Monday through Thursday from 8 am until 5 pm and on Fridays from 8 am until 1 pm.

Motorists will encounter lane closures southbound Sunday and Monday evenings from 9 pm until 3 pm the following afternoon, Monday through Thursday from 7 pm until 3 pm the following afternoon and Thursday evening from 7 pm until 1 pm the following afternoon.
