UPDATE: Northbound Hwy 1 just north of Western Drive back open

UPDATE 10/21/2017 10:40 p.m.: A small grass fire that stopped traffic on Highway One Saturday afternoon was ruled accidental.

According to the Santa Cruz Fire Department crews contained the fire to two acres and stopped it from spreading to nearby homes.

The Santa Cruz Fire Department is urging residents to be careful and use caution when enjoying rural areas and parks as the fire danger remains high.

UPDATE 10/21/2017 2:52 p.m.: Northbound Highway 1 from Western Drive is back open, according to Santa Cruz Police Department.

ORIGINAL: The Santa Cruz Fire Department is working on putting out a fire on northbound Highway 1 just north of Western Drive in Santa Cruz.

Officials ask that drivers avoid the area and use alternative routes. Drivers can take a detour on Western Drive to High Street until further notice.
