Cal Fire lists top 20 most destructive California wildfires

The Tubbs Fire in Sonoma County has been deemed the state’s most destructive wildfire to date.

According to Cal Fire, the Tubbs Fire has destroyed at least 5,300 structures out of 8,400 burned in the North Bay. The fire burning in Napa and Sonoma Counties has burned 36,432 acres and is 93 percent contained.

The Tubbs Fire ignited on October 8 around 9:45 p.m. and a windstorm helped spread the devastation across the wine country.

Before the Tubbs Fire, the Tunnel Fire in the Oakland Hills was known to be the most destructive fire since 1991.

The Tunnel Fire, now the second most destructive and deadly wildfire in California burned 1,600 acres, destroyed 2,900 structures and killed 25 people.

Three other fires currently burning in Northern California also made the top 20 most destructive fire list. The Nuns Fire burning at least 54,382 acres in Napa and Sonoma Counties has destroyed about 1,200 structures. Cal Fire has ranks the Nuns Fire as sixth most destructive California wildfire.

The Atlas Fire burning through 51,624 acres in Napa, Sonoma and Solano Counties ranked tenth with 741 structures burned.

Coming in at 16, the Redwood Valley Fire burning through 36,523 acres of land has destroyed an estimated 540 structures in Mendocino County.
