A Gilroy High School student is in custody after allegedly posting a picture of a gun with a caption that told others not to show up to school on Monday.

Witnesses of the post said the student took the picture on Snapchat Sunday night.

According to staff at Gilroy High School, Gilroy Police quickly investigated the threatening post and arrested the student. Staff members told KION that the student suspect told police the post was meant as a “joke.”

Parents of the student suspect are cooperating with police.

School was in session Monday and Principal of Gilroy High, Dr. Marco A. Sanchez released this statement:

“Gilroy Police Dept. has assessed the situation and has determined that there is no need to fear attending school today as they have the responsible person in custody. I have personally walked campus this morning and there are no visible signs of disruption or nothing out of the ordinary. We will keep you posted. Please consider sending your student to school.”

The incident has caused a lot of fear in students and parents. Principal Sanchez wants to remind everyone that the campus is safe.
