Airline helps Central Coast Couple send supplies to Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico is still recovering Thursday from the Hurricane that devastated the area and a Carmel Valley couple trying to help with the donations has finally found a way to do it.
When we first met the couple they had generators and food to send to Puerto Rico but no way to actually get them there.
With more than a hundred relatives on the storm damaged island of Puerto Rico, Christina Pennes and her husband Fernando knew they had to help.
“People are really coming together and helping each other and they’re doing what they can with what they can,” Pennes said, “They need more supplies and they need more things.”
Thanks to friends and family here on the Central Coast, they collected all sorts of supplies including nine generators. The problem was getting that nearly 2,000 pounds of cargo to the island.
Thankfully, a family friend who worked with Delta Airlines was able to step in.
“We went to ship it with him as an employee through Delta Cargo and they shipped the entire batch,” Pennes said.
The work isn’t done though. Christina and Fernando have already gathered more supplies for a second shipment.
“The friends and the family and the community just keeps on bringing it in,” Pennes said.
While the country deals with other tragedies, the couple hopes that their family and the people of Puerto Rico aren’t forgotten.
“Puerto Rico needs our help,” Pennes said, “They’re citizens of the United States, they need our help.”
Unfortunately Delta only opened up the opportunity for employees to send cargo to Puerto Rico through the first of October, so now the couple has to find another way to send them again.
