UCSC students continue to struggle finding housing in area
UPDATE September 27, 2017 6:20pm
Students at UCSC are gearing up for the first day of instruction tomorrow, however some of them are still feeling the headache of finding a place to live.
5,360 students will be calling the campus their new home this semester. But with a housing shortage in that area, many of these are students struggling to find a place to live long-term.
Officials say there is enough housing for 50% of the students (which is apparently a high amount for public school in California) but they admit the shortage of overall housing in the area is making it harder for students.
Transfer students are guaranteed one year housing on-campus, while first time students are guaranteed two years. Their housing prices vary based on meal plans and the amount of roommates in the dorm.
UCSC Director of News and Media, Scott Hernandez Jason, says there are resources at school and online to help students with finding housing. “We also have a community rental office, that is there to help find students places to live, it has an online listing of rooms and places to rent and also has a workshop for students to learn how to become renters,” says Jason.
UCSC officials say they encourage students to look for housing early, but if they are still struggling this close to the school year, there are staff members that can help. Jason also says all of the on-campus spaces are currently full, but there is a wait list students can be put on in the event some students do not come to school.
One 4th year student, Simone Selder, says she was lucky to find housing this year, but still has to live with six roommates, “I am living with six other people so that’s a lot of people in one house and last year I lived with five other people so everyone just kind of on top of everyone.”
Seldor says she has friends that have asked to live in her garage while they look for housing after the school year already started, “They have come to me and asked if they could live in my garage and unfortunately I wasn’t able to help them out that year but I had other friends who are able to help them and have them live out of their garage for a couple of months.”
