Gilroy fire department working on putting out vegetation fire

UPDATE 7/24/2017 9:52 a.m. According to Cal Fire, the fire burning in Gilroy is now 125 acres and 70 percent contained.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Firefighters slowed the progress of a wildfire near Gilroy Sunday night after it had consumed more than 150 acres, authorities said.

Cal Fire said the progress of the blaze in unincorporated Santa Clara County near Gilroy had slowed and was 20 percent contained.

Cal Fire spokesman Scott McLean said the fire near the intersection of Castro Valley Road and U.S. Highway 101 had burned about 150 acres by 6:10 p.m.

The fire was reported at 4:07 p.m. and by about 5 p.m. the blaze had burned 50 acres. It was not threatening any structures and no one has been injured, McLean said.
