SPCA receives dozens of animals in one weekend

Summertime on the Central Coast is usually a fun time for people, but not necessarily for pets. Many are neglected or abandoned as owners can’t take care of them or simply don’t want them.

it’s not only an extremely hard time for animals who were either lost or abandoned, but also for area shelters, including the SPCA for Monterey County, who receives dozens of animals every week during the summer.

This past weekend alone, the SPCA took in a whopping 73 animals, which sadly isn’t even a record amount in one weekend. They mostly include dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens, but also include geese, pigs, ducks, and snakes. All of those animals obviously need food and water but also vaccinations and medical care, which is why the SPCA is hoping people will help.

“This seems to be the trend this summer with a lot of puppies, a lot of kittens coming in. A lot of unwanted animals, and anything anyone can do to help, either by adopting, by donating, by fostering, or even by getting your own pets spayed and neutered, we would be incredibly grateful, and so would little ones like this guy here,” said Director of Community Outreach for the SPCA for Monterey County, Beth Brookhouser.

Even though this guy in the picture above, named John Snow, has already been adopted, dozens of other animals are looking for homes. The SPCA says they receive so many during the summer months because a lot of animals have their offspring around this time and also many people are moving in and out of the area, and surrender their pets when they can’t take care of them.

The SPCA for Monterey County will always have pets available for adoption, but remember that they along with many other shelters around the Central Coast are always looking for volunteers as well.
