Salinas Valley State Prison investigates attempted homicide
UPDATE 7/12/2017 5:07 p.m. Five inmates have been taken to the hospital after a riot broke out at Salinas Valley State Prison in Soledad.
The fight happened around 3:00 p.m. Wednesday. Two inmates began to fight on the Facility D yard, a maximum-security sensitive yard. 20 inmates eventually joined in on the riot. Staff members quickly used chemical agents to stop the riot.
Medical staff treated inmates who sustained multiple lacerations and puncture wounds. Officers recovered several inmate-made weapons. One inmate was airlifted to a trauma center. Four others were transported by ambulance to community hospitals. All other injured inmates were treated at the prison. No employees were injured.
SVSP is investigating the riot as an attempted homicide incident.
