Salinas Fire and Police work together 4th of July

Salinas Fire and Police are working side by side this Fourth of July to keep you safe.

Their efforts come as this Fourth of July marks the return of “Safe and Sane” fireworks in Salinas, but Police and Fire still had a busy night.

They’re working to keep illegal fireworks out of the community and make sure “Safe and Sane” fireworks are only being used on private property.

Salinas Police and Fire discussed their plan at Fire Station One Tuesday night.

Each department has additional resources and teams dedicated solely to fireworks prevention.

Salinas Fire even sent out warning letters to addresses that were caught with fireworks last year.

Salinas Police says even though they want everyone to have a good time, they will be enforcing the law.

“We’re very serious, we believe the community has been sufficiently forewarned that we are out and enforcing the law and we’re going to cite or they will receive a citation later if we’re not able to issue it at that moment,” said Salinas Police Chief Adele Frese.

Salinas Mayor Joe Gunter was also there Tuesday. He says he has complete faith in the ability of both departments to keep the community safe.

“They’re well coordinated, they’ve worked together on other operations but they understand each side’s mission,” said Mayor Joe Gunter, “When they have an incident like this, their mission comes together.”

If you’re caught using illegal fireworks or “Safe and Sane” fireworks inappropriately, the penalty can run between 100 and 1500 dollars.

A final count of the number of tickets they hand out will be given to the City Council within 90 days.
