NYPD Officer shot and killed
CBS NEWS-A New York City police officer is dead after being ambushed overnight in the Bronx.
The NYPD said Officer Miosotis Familia was inside a parked mobile command unit when 34-year-old Alexander Bonds walked up and shot her in the head, fewer than three hours after the city’s July Fourth fireworks ended. Police shot and killed Bonds about a block away.
“It is clear this was an unprovoked attack on police officers who are assigned to keep the people of this great city safe. She was sitting in the vehicle and he came up and fired a round into the vehicle,” said NYPD Commissioner James P. O’Neill.
Familia’s frantic partner called for help moments after the shooting.
“My partner is shot. My partner is shot!” “Get me an ambulance,” said Familia’s partner.
Jay Marzelli said he saw the shooting unfold, “I saw like a brawl happening in the police van, like someone was in there like a crazy guy with a gun. And then a police officer was shot at point blank range.”
Officer Familia was a 12-year NYPD veteran and mother of three. She was rushed to St. Barnabus Hospital.
The Mayor of New York City, Bill de Blasio said the female police officer was attacked out of nowhere, shot doing a job she loved.
“She was on duty serving this city, protecting people,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio.
The NYPD released a picture of the gun allegedly used in the shooting and called on the public for help.
“We can’t do it by ourselves. We need everyone’s help. We need the media’s help, we need the folks on the street corner, we need the people in the apartments, we always need your help to watch our backs as we watch yours,” said PBA President, Pat Lynch.
Sources told CBS News that Bonds was on parole for a robbery in Syracuse, New York. During the shootout with police an innocent bystander was shot in the stomach, but is in stable condition.
