Monterey Police work to keep fireworks out

Monterey Police are working to keep fireworks out of the city as we head into the Fourth of July.

Fireworks are illegal there but that’s not the case for a neighboring city.

Despite fireworks being allowed in some spots on the Central Coast, Monterey Police say, not in their city.

Though they may be strict, officers say it’s for a good reason.

Hundreds head out to fireworks stands ahead of Fourth of July festivities, many hoping to light some off at home.

They’re not allowed everywhere but, Seaside is one city where they’re not banned.

Down the road in Del Rey Oaks though, fireworks are illegal and police are saying Monterey is no different.

“We do not allow any fireworks in the city of Monterey,” says Police Chief Dave Hober.

If you do bring them in, even from a city where they’re allowed, be prepared to face consequences.

“They will be cited and we will be submitting those to prosecution and the fine is a thousand dollars,” said Chief Hober.

Still some Central Coast residents say it’s a shame fireworks can’t be enjoyed all over.

“I think everyone deserves the right to celebrate the Fourth of July,” said Seaside resident Eric Ericson. “Not just the city, the lovely city of Seaside.”

“All through the 50 states on this day you should be able to come [to a fireworks stand], buy your fireworks, as many as you want and have a good time,” said William Shaw, another Seaside resident.

Cities like Monterey though, have their reasons for keeping fireworks off their streets.

“One, we’re concerned about people getting injured and we’re also concerned about fires,” said Chief Hober.

Police say there’s plenty of other safe ways to celebrate this Independence Day.

“We have all kinds of great things going on that hopefully people will come out and enjoy,” Chief Hober said.

If you live in Monterey and hear fireworks going off, the police chief says you can give the department a call on their non-emergency line.
