The largest private residential ship in the world is docked in Monterey Bay.

The 644 ft. long cruise ship The World entered the bay Sunday , and is scheduled to depart at midnight on June 21.

The ship began its journey in April in Hakodate, Japan. The cruise made its way through ports in Asia and the South Pacific, and it ‘s now moving along the coast of North America.

The World passengers create the cruise itinerary and take part in an enrichment program where experts on the cruise’s various destinations educate passengers on culture, traditions and language of each destination.

Alliah Sheetah, Director of Communications & Community Relations at the Monterey County Convention & Visitors Bureau , said that Fisherman’s Wharf and Cannery Row are popular destinations for cruise ships that dock in the bay.

Cruises and their passengers most directly impact the local economy through a sales tax of 8.75 percent in the city of Monterey, according to Sheetah. The average sales tax in California is set at 7.75 percent.

The World is scheduled to embark on four cruises this year. The cruise currently underway is the only one that will dock in the Monterey Bay.
