Tatum’s Garden to open second location in Toro Park

A local park that caters to all children has become so popular in Salinas, another one is in the works not too far away.

Tatum’s Garden in on North Main Street in Salinas has become the go-to park for many families on the Central Coast, but plans are in the works to build a second location in Toro Park of highway 68.

Tatum’s Garden is an all-inclusive playground, which means it was designed to allow every and any child use the equipment regardless of any physical impairments or the need to use a wheelchair or walker. Since opening in late 2013, the playground has received such positive feedback that the Tatum’s Garden Foundation decided to start working on a second location inside of Toro Park, called Tatum’s Treehouse.

“It will be completely different; similar but different space out in Toro County Park. Here our setting is in the middle of town, but out in Toro, it’s just this gorgeous, pristine surrounded by hills and oak trees kind of a setting,” said Tatum’s Garden Foundation President and Tatum’s Mother, Amanda Bakker.

“If we’re having two gardens, we’ll have one here, and one in Toro Park,” said Tatum Bakker.

Tatum’s Treehouse will have the same concept as Tatum’s Garden with ramps and flat floors for handicapped access, but will also incorporate the natural beauty of Toro Park. The main attraction will be the illustrious treehouse for which the park will be named for.

Though the park is currently in the planning stages with the county, Amanda Bakker hopes Tatum’s Treehouse will be ready to open around a year from now. They’ll also be looking for volunteers to help build and maintain the park when the time comes.
