Man accused of pointing fake gun at Highway 1 driver

UPDATE 5/23/17 5:35 p.m.: A man, arrested near Capitola Mall, may face criminal charges after deputies say he pointed a fake gun at a driver this afternoon.

According to the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office, the incident started on Highway 1 near Mar Monte Ave. in Watsonville just after 3:30 p.m.

After pointing the fake gun at a driver, deputies said he pointed the gun at himself. The man was later found near Yogurtland at the Capitola Mall and was arrested.

Deputies said he’s also being held for a mental health evaluation.

UPDATE 5/23/2017 4:13 p.m.: Capitola Police say the Capitola Mall entrance from Claires near Starbucks, Burger King and Ross is now back open.

Police activity at Capitola Mall, the Capitola Police Department asks the public to avoid the entrance from Claires near Starbucks, Burger King and Ross until further notice.

Police say the scene is secure.
